Choosing accounting software shouldn’t take a week of reading reviews. The Accounting Guide helps business owners find the right fit in a few minutes.

Why this site exists

Most “best accounting software” lists rank the same handful of products in the same order, no matter who’s reading. But a freelance designer, a 40-person construction firm, and a shop selling overseas need very different things. The right answer depends on your business.

So we built a short quiz. You tell us your company size, your industry, where you do business, your budget, and the features you care about. We match those answers against what each product actually does well and what it costs, and give you one top pick plus two alternatives, with the reasons spelled out.

How we judge software

  • Overall value: what you get for the price, including the costs that show up after the free trial.
  • Fit for your size: tools that suit a solo owner rarely suit a finance team, and the reverse.
  • Fit for your industry: job costing for trades, inventory for retail, fund tracking for nonprofits.
  • Domestic or international: multi-currency support and local tax handling.

How we make money

Some links on this site are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you sign up, at no extra cost to you. That never changes how products are scored. The full details are in our affiliate disclosure.

Who’s behind it

I’m Greg Gould, an auditor based in Charlotte, North Carolina. My work takes me inside the books of large corporations and small businesses alike, and I’ve worked with many different accounting systems along the way. If there’s one lesson from all of it, it’s that no system fits everyone. The software that runs smoothly for a five-person agency can hold back a growing manufacturer, and the reverse is just as true. I started The Accounting Guide to help owners choose a system that fits their business today and still fits as it grows, so they get cleaner books, smoother year-ends, and no painful switch two years from now.
